Enclosed trailers provide additional security and protection for your cargo whatever it may be. Many enclosed trailers are designed specifically to haul different types of cargo, so before you purchase make sure you are completely clear on exactly what you are planning to haul. Remember also that some enclosed trailer designs are more versatile than others.

In this article we have set out the main types of enclosed trailer on the market as well as things to look out for whether you are renting or purchasing a new or a used enclosed trailer. Most enclosed trailers on the market will be tandem trailers to allow for greater load capacity and for increased stability. Trailers designed for lighter loads can be towed by a standard family car or pick up truck while higher capacity trailers may require larger towing vehicles. Most of the enclosed trailers listed below are towed via a standard towing hitch although models with fifth wheeler couplings are also available.

Enclosed Cargo Trailer

This is a generic term for a utility trailer designed to be high versatile. These are normally designed to carry lighter loads and often do not allow for a ride on or ride off option. Check for low sides to accommodate easy loading and unloading. Some utility trailers can be converted into a dump trailer by adding a hydraulic lift mechanism.

Enclosed Car Trailer

These trailers are designed to transport cars safely. Classic car enthusiasts in particular will be keen to use an enclosed trailer to tow their vehicle (to a car show for example) rather than reduce its value with increased mileage. Enclosed designs will protect the car from the elements, flying debris on the highway and prying eyes. Look out for tilting car trailer models that allow for easy loading.

For larger loads it may be necessary to consider a gooseneck trailer as this allows for better stability and easier turning that a standard trailer hitch. Larger capacity models will have their own braking system. Be sure to check for any special licensing requirements.

Travel Trailer

The use of trailers as portable homes, much like a motor home or RV is on the rise. Look for modern amenities such as built in kitchens, toilets, security doors, showers (ideally internal and external), air-conditioning, entertainment units and rattle free storage designs. Tent trailers are a more scaled down version of a travel trailer. The tend is packed into the trailer itself and is folded out at the camp ground.

Enclosed Toy Trailer

These are designed to carry golf carts, motorcycles, quad bikes or snowmobiles. Most are designed with loading ramps for drive on and off loading and unloading. The more versatile models will also be able to accommodate most mini machines such as mini-diggers, mini graders, mini tractors, skid steers, (such as the New Holland skid steer for example), and so on.

Enclosed Horse Trailer

When considering a horse trailer the safety and comfort of your horse is paramount. Look out for look our for horse friendly features such as comfortable stall dividers with body, shoulder and head separators; saddle rack; windows and openings with bars and screens positioned to allow for fresh air at head height; tack wall as well as inside and outside tie rings. You'll also want an access ramp to walk the horses on and off. Many of these features are also needed for livestock transport.

If you are traveling long distances or plan to overnight, a horse trailer with living quarters may be worth considering. These come complete with toilet, shower, sink - together with the horse stalls of course. A horse trailer with living quarters also offers the perfect place for relaxing after a weekend trail ride.

Enclosed Boat Trailer

Boats are delicate pieces of equipment and enclosed trailers are used to protect the fragile boat hull from the elements and allow for a cushioned ride.  Most boat trailers, whether enclosed or not, are designed to be able to be able to be backed down a boat ramp into the water to allow easy winching, or manual handling, of the boat on and off the trailer. Some models offer special cradles molded to accommodate a boat hull and designed so that the boat does not topple sideways during loading and unloading.

Concession or Catering Trailer

These allow the mobile vending of food and other services allowing you to go directly to where your customers are gathered. The most common catering trailers include hot dog concession trailers, ice cream concession trailers, coffee concession trailers and pizza concession trailers. Reefer trailers are a subtype designed to transport perishable goods and come equipped with a refrigeration unit.
